daily fashion
its power and its limits
There’s something that has mesmerised me for a whole lifetime already but I don’t think I ever put it in words:
daily fashion is an outlet for self exploration and creativity.
Its way of being self expression, holds a power over self-confidence and holds more meaning than we ever put into words.
When we people watch there’s almost a fashion show going on before our eyes, just that we call it daily life. But when we look close, the little pieces we see in a look give us information about the person we are looking at before anything else. An outfit conveys interests, statues and ideals. There are things that never need to be said because we already are beyond sure of the answer due to the way someone dresses and carries themselves. No words involved and yet so much said.
The artist who wears the jeans with paint splatters on them and the easy slip-in shoes is already talking to you about his creativity and its chill demeanour. They are already telling you, that they are not striving for the 9-5 corporate job and hyrox training after, type of life. They are telling you however that they tend to appreciate art more than the average person. That they create themselves and that they carry enough confidence to be witnessed doing it.
The person with the rainbow socks is telling you as much as the person with the perfectly ironed button down on a Sunday. They are telling you which part of society they want to be falling into, they are showing you desires of specific belonging.
So when people look at the rainbow covered outfit it appears loud and political. Yet in my eyes the beige chinos and blue button down, the polo shirt and white linen pants, those are just as political. They belong to a specific part of our society too.
When I look at my personal journey with daily fashion, I can see growth but also a growing desire to explore even more. There is still ways in which my daily style isn’t representing me or the me that I desire to be. I tend to go safe and I tend to not put as much time into it as I would like to. I would like to be more explorative and more self creating.
Something that I have, as almost every one of us, is the desire to be just as well dressed and curated as the people we see. The people who look like it is effortless for them to come up with the perfect fit and jewellery combination every day.
And you know what they share?
Effort, time and curiosity spend on fashion, clothing and dressing well. They try on 20-times as many pieces as you did, they invested tripple the time that you did into it and grew an eye for what they desire. So nowadays it all looks like it comes easy to them. They take a short time for the perfect combination and the collection of well fitted pieces is already there.
So I want to look at those people and learn from them.
We all have something we can teach one another and I want to be witness to their greatness in the taste they build for themselves. I want to ask questions and appreciate them for the incredible gift they are giving me by showing me how there is a possibility in front of me that I am not taking.
A daily fit is a daily form of self expression, a daily form of creating one self, a creative way of being, it is self directed and glorious on its own terms.
So the next time you worry to wear something you are not sure about, go for it. Try on different versions of who you can be, without shame, without questioning your rights to specific clothing. Grow your own style, your own taste and teach your own eyes. Explore the world a little every day by combining something you never did before.
And when you feel stressed, wear what you wore before, what worked, what feels good.
But don’t underestimate the power your own ways of putting on clothing, it can be your own tool.
It is not about the world around you in all those moments, but about you.
It’s about you appreciating your own beauty, your own body and your own way of being, which is something no one else has, but you.
’no one can wear the pieces as you do’
and it is true.
Go out there and create you in many small ways, many pieces coming together.
Daily clothing being one of those small pieces.
And for the spreading love part of this, a list of specific pieces I loved seeing on people today:
- the color of the shirt that perfectly worked for this girls hair and skin color, a deep burgundy and her birthmarks next to it looking divine
- the lengths of the baristas sport shorts, that convey a leisurely way, confidence and sportiness
- the tote bag from an art school carried by the otherwise chill and not too loudly dressed guy that adds the perfect off-duty artist look to him
- the table of four all wearing flip-flops (in the city, no beach close) cause it is Sunday and you are hanging out with the bros, no need to impress or dress different than at home. loved by me for the perfect chill vibes and ‘will not walk or do much’ energy this Sunday deserves
- the leather laptop bag from the dude working on a Sunday on his MacBook in the cafe, rounding up the ‘will get done things the classy way’ energy
- the snoopy shirt on a middle aged men paired with sophisticated pieces like a watch, well trimmed beard and suit pants, reminding everyone to be a bit childish and playful at times
- the two older guys with skinny jeans and chains dangling on their sides, long beards and black band shirts, showing you how to age with confidence and identity. two rock’n’roll legends
complement someones look today guyysss, let them know they look immaculate 🫶🏼
and as always:
